TL;DR: Lake Ohrid on the border between Albania and North Macedonia dates back to pre-glacial times. It's the only remaining home in the World for over 200 freshwater species. It is one of Europe's deepest and oldest lakes. Ancient fishermen settlements on wooden piles from the Bronze Age have been found along the shores of the lake. Ohrid town is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. It represents the best-preserved and most complete collection of ancient city architecture of this part of Europe. The architects built churches here that would become the model for how to build churches for hundreds of years afterwards.

Lake Ohrid dates back to pre-glacial times. It’s the only remaining home in the World for over 200 freshwater species.

Ancient fishermen settlements on wooden piles from the Bronze Age have been found along the shores of the lake. Sites around the lake point to origins in the Neolithic period. Ohrid town is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. It represents the best-preserved and most complete collection of ancient city architecture of this part of Europe. The architects built churches here that would become the model for how to build churches for hundreds of years afterwards.

UNESCO's  4 Why

Cultural Reason #1
Cultural Reason #3
Cultural Reason #4
Natural Reason #7
The town of Ohrid in North Macedonia is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. There are remains here from all the way back to the Bronze Age, more than 1000 years BC. Ohrid also has plenty of religious buildings, churches, from the 7th to 19th centuries and up to 300 years old houses. The sheer amount of remains and buildings within the old town of Ohrid, in the Lin Peninsula, and along the coast of Lake Ohrid make this region truly unique.
The churches in the region have a massive 2500 m2 of frescoes and more than 800 icons altogether. It's all Christian art from the time of the Byzantine Empire in the Middle Ages 500-1500 A.D. The architects of this time built churches here that became the model for how to build churches for hundreds of years afterwards. The religious life along the shores of the lake, the architecture, and the amount of frescoes and icons all shows how important this region was as a religious and cultural centre.
At Lake Ohrid, you have the oldest Slavonic monastery and the first Slavonic University in the Balkans. The Ohrid literary school spread writing, education and culture throughout the old Slavonic world. The old Ohrid town centre still has its original ancient layout and location on the hills by the lakeside. It is full of early Christian religious buildings from the 4th-century and onwards. It also has a forum, public buildings and houses dating back to the time it was the ancient town of Lychnidos.
Lake Ohrid, with a history dating from pre-glacial times, is a natural phenomenon. Being quite isolated and through time untouched, it is the only remaining home in the World for several freshwater species. In a lake where the available nutrients actually offer little to sustain life, there are still over 200 species that only exist here in the World. Many of them live on the seafloor but also 17 species of fish. The natural birdlife of the Lake is also very rich.
