When is the best time to visit = June to September

Tanzania is huge and its sheer size means that the weather varies a lot within it. In general, though, the best time to visit Tanzania as a whole is from late June to August. Called kipupwe this is the coolest and sunniest part of the year, and it is dry almost everywhere. This is, in general, the best time to see a lot of different animals. With that said there is really never a completely wrong time to visit. Even during the rainy seasons, the tropical rains happens mostly in the afternoon and in the form of downpours or thunderstorms. This practically means that in the first part of the day the sky is often clear. When to visit is instead more about what you are interested in seeing. Here are a few of the things to consider:

  • January and February is the ‘short dry season‘. Late January and February is the season for the wildebeest calving.
  • Generally, the main rainy season, the ‘long rains‘, is during March, April and May.
  • June and July are when the Great Migration usually happens.
  • The long dry season lasts throughout June, July, August, September and October.
  • In November and December is the second rainy season, the ‘short rains‘. As the name implies the rains are much lighter but also less reliable.
